Children and the Arts Workshop

Here at The Atkinson we are always looking at new and innovative ways to engage young people who visit our workshops into bringing out their creative sides, in doing so we have been very fortunate to work alongside ‘Children and the Arts’ with their ‘START’ project to additionally provide these workshops to schools and children with special educational needs.

START is a UK-wide programme that aims to reach children who are missing out on a creative and cultural education. START is tailored towards children in disadvantaged circumstances to give them access to high quality arts experiences that increase their confidence, boost their self-esteem and raise their aspirations.

So far the response towards our workshops has been overwhelmingly positive, with children and teachers expressing their excitement and enthusiasm!

Our workshops lately have consisted of taking a tour round our Star Wars May The Toys Be With You exhibition and having the children point out the items within our display that they liked the most followed by playing and experimenting with the green screen we have set up to look like anyone in front of the camera could be part of the Star Wars universe.

Then moving on to the second half of the workshop where the children get to interact with another camera based program that records movement and colours with the use of some light up toys to create a picture (kind of how you can write your name with a bonfire sparkler) in order to take some of the inspiration they have gathered from our Star Wars exhibition and try to create their own movie posters.

The results have been spectacular:
