Volunteer Blog – Construction Club

By: Mo Lawson, Volunteer at The Atkinson

The first Saturday of 2017 and the first Construction Club of the year. In case you don’t know, here’s a little insight into all things construction… We take over the Discovery Box once a month with a huge crate of Lego, paired with the enthusiasm and imagination of the children we construct Lego fun for hours.

My expectation of the first session since after Christmas was that it would be a quiet morning – I really should have known better! For the New Year our start time changed to 10.30am and luckily my fellow Lego lady volunteer, Romy, was there early to get people started as when I arrived at 10.30am the place was buzzing.

It wasn’t long before we had to deploy our spare table and find more chairs and more families kept appearing! Eventually we had to expand on to the landing with some tables borrowed from another room. With everyone getting stuck in there was nothing but fun, lots of fantastic creations, happy people interacting and most saying they will be back next time. They even helped us tidy up before they left!

It was a brilliant morning, thanks to everyone who came and my fellow volunteer Romy who was awesome as usual. Looking forward to February!

The next Construction Club takes place this Saturday (4 February) from 10.30am – 12.30pm in the Discovery Box on the second floor. Ages 5+ (children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult)
