Curator’s Blog – Rediscovering Our Collections

Friday 5th August 2016

In the past two weeks I feel like I don’t really have much to update on the project since my last post! Work has progressed on photographing the collection but due to other commitments in my diary I’ve not had my lovely photography students in as much as I would have liked.

I’ve just said I’ve not done much but actually thinking about it, I spent a fun day in the art store last Friday with another volunteer, Louise, and we had great fun sorting out the prints into different drawers so we know, for example, where all our contemporary prints are. We didn’t do as much moving about as we could have done as we kept getting distracted by all our amazing prints and spending a bit too much time just looking at some of them and discussing what we thought about them and what we thought was going on and what the messages were. The Atkinson is hosting a touring exhibition from the British Museum on pop art prints in January 2018 and we’re adding to this exhibition with prints from our own collection so Louise and I were thinking about this exhibition while we were sorting and already we think we’ve got a few good candidates! I’m very excited about this forthcoming exhibition and it’ll be great to show some of our amazing prints, possibly for the first time!

Speaking of exhibitions, My First Ladies exhibition closes this Sunday and then we’ll start getting ready to install the watercolour exhibition: Tinted Steam & Liquid Light. I took my three year old daughter to see First Ladies last weekend and I got her seal of approval for it as she liked the different colours!

I’ve included an image from the forthcoming watercolour exhibition (top of this post)to highlight how amazing this next show is going to be. The image is Vesuvius Erupting by JMW Turner and is kindly on loan to us from The Williamson Art Gallery in Birkenhead. I have to say that the photograph of the painting doesn’t do it justice and this is definitely one that has to be seen up close!
